"Coach, you're on the clock" Part II - Lon Kruger

Oklahoma needs Lon Kruger's steady approach.

It is typical for a new coach to enter a situation and open fire. Press conferences, booster clubs, whirlwind fan engagements, recruiting, phone calls, more meetings, etc…

The game’s top assistant coaches now attend workshops and seminars learning how to detail, and basically survive, their first 100 days on the job while they, oh yeah, find time to bunker down and prepare the current roster for the upcoming season.

“Busy” borders on insane. “Loud” abounds, choking out virtually all quiet time. Coaches cling to their printed plan tighter than they do to a signed letter of intent and sometimes just seem to hope they don’t become a paralysis-by-analysis statistic.

K-State: Does Jamar Samuels feel the heating water?

Can Jamar Samuels get everything in order well enough
to assume a senior leadership role?

In January 2010, the Texas Longhorns rolled into Manhattan for a Big Monday game, and NBA scouts piled into Bramlage Coliseum to check out Damion James and Dexter Pittman as well as Curtis Kelly.

But, it was Kansas State’s Jamar Samuels who stole the show with 15 points and six rebounds in the first half, finishing with 20 and 12. I talked with a scout that night who admitted he didn’t know all that much about the then-sophomore, but his performance would be noted in the scout’s report.

I wonder where that report might be these days…
